Happy Labor Day Weekend! In the Meet Submittable series, we’ll be interviewing employees at Submittable over the coming weeks. In this inaugural interview, we talk to Emily Witcher, our technical product manager and software engineer. Take it away, Emily.

Tell us a little about yourself.
I’ve been working as a web developer and system administrator in Montana for 17 years.
How did you come to work at Submittable?
I was fortunate to know and have worked with all three founders, so I was invited to come on board as a software engineer in early 2013.
How long have you lived in Montana? What brought you here?
I grew up in Billings, Montana, and graduated from high school there. After several years attending school on both coasts, I decided to return to Montana in 1998 and started my web development career here. With only a few hiatuses, I have managed to stay employed in the industry ever since.
What do you do in your free time?
I enjoy landscape photography, TV of varying quality, and spending time with my black cat companion, Nona.
What’s your favorite place to visit in Montana?
Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park is my favorite place in Montana and probably on earth.
What’s your secret talent or superpower?
Little kids (especially age 6 and under) always find me hilarious, even if I’m not doing anything in particular.
Any books you’re reading or have recently read that you’d like to recommend?
I love driving and am a nerd for local history, so Taming Big Sky Country: The History of Montana Transportation from Trails to Interstates by Jon Axline is what I’m currently speeding through.
What’s your favorite website to follow?
I am addicted to Tumblr and my guilty pleasure is Oh No They Didn’t – “the celebrities are disposable; the gossip is priceless!”
Do you have any projects coming up that you’re excited to work on?
Hoping to learn embroidery and combine it with my love of maps to make some interesting art.
Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I have a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science. Even today I am using the database knowledge & skills that were taught to me in that program. Librarians rock!
